In January of 1972, after several months of operating a small animal clinic out of a residential basement in Nelson, Dr. Hugh Croxall and his wife Pat purchased and moved clinical operations to the front room and basement of their home on Ymir road while completing construction on the adjacent facility. On May 15, 1972 Mayor Louis Maglio officiated the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new hospital building. At this time the Croxall's were the first resident, full-time veterinary service in the Nelson area-but also worked 2 nights weekly in Castlegar until selling that clinic in 1980. In 1998, Dr. Croxall sold the Nelson Animal Hospital practice to Dr. Andrew Jones, who continued to operate out of the facility on Ymir road until selling the practice to Dr. Celeste Bignell in 2011. Services expanded and we outgrew the facility on Ymir road and on July 27, 2016, Nelson Animal Hospital opened in its new location on McDonald Drive-where our staff size has since doubled!
Fast forward to today, where we are still a locally owned and operated veterinary hospital and continuing to provide comprehensive healthcare services to pets in Nelson and all over the West Kootenays-now seven days per week! We currently have five veterinarians; each offering a wide variety of services in our veterinary clinic.
